In the United States, more than one million patients receive radiation treatment
annually. Every day, radiation oncologists and therapists face the challenge of
accurately treating mobile tumor targets throughout the duration
of every patient's radiation oncology treatment session.
Working on the forefront of this serious challenge is Calypso® Medical Technologies,
Inc., an emerging life science medical device company dedicated to shaping the future
of radiation therapy delivery and management. From early concept development through
commercialization of products, Calypso Medical's purpose is to develop compelling
products to improve the delivery of cancer therapy.
In early product development, Calypso Medical learned that tumor motion
during patient radiation therapy was a daily challenge for radiation
clinicians. It became apparent that delivering a technology platform that could
continuously monitor the location of a tumor throughout the duration
of radiation treatment would be a significant clinical advance. The technology had
to be efficient and easy to use in a fast-paced clinic environment, and offer real-time
sub-millimeter1 accuracy. At the same time, the harsh radiation treatment environment
had to be considered during the development of the individual components for this
emerging technology.
In order to better understand the dynamic radiation oncology treatment environment
and workflow patterns, the Calypso Medical team collaborated with world class clinicians
and researchers during the initial development stages.
The Calypso® 4D Localization System™, referred to as GPS for the Body®, was cleared
by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in July 2006 and provides clinicians radiation
delivery guidance in prostate cancer treatment. Since the launch of the Calypso
System, many leading cancer institutions in the United States have adopted this
new unique technology for prostate cancer therapy.

Awards and Recognition
The Calypso® 4D Localization System™ was selected as a 2007 Gold Award winner for best product design by the International Design Excellence Awards™ (IDEA). The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) and Business Week co-sponsor the coveted Gold Award and the Calypso® 4D Localization System™ was selected from a total of 1,691 entries and is one of 20 Gold award winners.
