Dynamic EdgeTM Gating automates the response to organ motion with a continuous, real-time signal to the linear accelerator. Radiation delivery is automatically paused each time the treatment target moves outside the preset patient-specific threshold. When the target is within the motion threshold, radiation delivery is resumed. Calypso’s gating solution is based on the internal target position rather than external surrogates to provide confidence motion has been managed based on actual target location.
By allowing clinicians to define objective, patient-specific motion thresholds, operator subjectivity about when to intervene and hold the beam is eliminated which results in a more uniform approach to radiation delivery. Dynamic Edge Gating technology extends the Calypso System’s safeguard against unnecessary radiation and complements ASTRO’s Target Safely initiative formed in response to public concern over excessive radiation delivery caused by equipment and operator error. With Dynamic Edge Gating, treatment delivery is now automatically paused when the target falls outside the motion threshold and automatically resumed when the target is within threshold limits.
