Calypso Medical Gears Up For Successful 2009 By Bolstering Executive Team

SEATTLE—Feb. 27, 2009—Calypso Medical Technologies Inc., an emerging growth medical device company dedicated to shaping the future of radiation therapy delivery and management, today announced an expansion of the executive team, in response to a rapidly growing market opportunity for the Calypso System.

To date, Calypso Medical has more than 75 customers in 26 states.  Known as GPS for the Body®, the Calypso System has helped prostate cancer patients optimize their external beam radiation therapy by continuously tracking organ motion in real-time and enabling more accurate delivery of radiation with minimal impact to surrounding healthy tissue.

Jed Palmacci joins the company as vice president, global sales and customer solutions; Lorraine Marshall Wright joins as vice president, chief marketing officer; and Ed Vertatschitsch, Ph.D., who previously served as vice president, engineering, assumes the new position of senior vice president of operations. In this new position, Dr. Vertatschitsch will oversee all engineering, clinical, information technology and manufacturing operations.

Jed Palmacci has extensive experience building and managing global sales organizations within successful medical device companies, selling high value capital equipment as well as proprietary consumable products. Jed has a proven track record of achievement: during his tenure at Siemens Medical, he built the sales and service organizations into the worldwide market leader for interventional cardiac ultrasound. More recently as vice-president at Hansen Medical, Jed built the sales and service organizations from the ground up to successfully lead the market for electrophysiology robotics.

Lorraine Marshall Wright brings more than 20 years of experience in medical device marketing to Calypso Medical. For over a decade as the principal consultant for the Parallax Group, Lorraine managed a broad range of marketing projects from strategic planning to product commercialization. Her client list included a variety of corporations and investor groups including Hansen Medical, Intuitive Surgical, and Boston Scientific. Prior to starting her consultancy, Lorraine held a variety of marketing positions at Acuson Corporation (now Siemens Medical Solutions) and Philips Medical Systems.

“The expansion of our management team reflects the sustained growth and increasing market penetration of the Calypso System, which we forecast to continue throughout 2009,” said Eric R. Meier, president and CEO of Calypso Medical. “We are pleased to welcome Jed and Lorraine, who bring to Calypso a wealth of industry experience and leadership, highlighted by an outstanding balance of business acumen and strong interpersonal and management skills. In addition, the promotion of Ed Vertatschitsch is a well-deserved recognition of his many contributions to the company.”

Known as “GPS for the Body®,” Calypso Medical’s 4D Localization System utilizes tiny electromagnetic transponders placed in or around a tumor to provide precise, continuous information on the location of the tumor during external beam radiation therapy. Any movement by the patient, including internal movement of the tumor, may cause the radiation to miss its intended target and hit adjacent healthy tissue. In contrast to other tumor targeting solutions, Calypso Medical’s GPS for the Body technology provides continuous tumor position information, objectively and without ionizing radiation, thereby optimizing the delivery of radiation to the tumor and minimizing misapplied radiation to normal tissue.

About Calypso Medical
Calypso Medical Technologies, Inc. (“Calypso”) is a Seattle, Wash.-based privately held medical device company. The Company's proprietary tumor localization system utilizes miniaturized implanted devices (Beacon® electromagnetic transponders) to continuously, accurately, and objectively pinpoint and track the location of tumors for improved accuracy and management of radiation therapy delivery. Calypso addresses two major issues in modern radiation oncology: errors in treatment set-up and management of tumor motion during treatment. In addition, the Calypso 4D Localization System's non-ionizing electromagnetic guidance has been found to improve workflow efficiency and treatment room utilization. The technology is designed for body-wide cancers commonly treated with radiation therapy. The products are FDA 510(k) cleared for use in the prostate and post-operative prostatic bed.
